Chubb Trail
Location: The Lone Elk trail head is close to Highway 44 and 141. The West Tyson trail head is close to Highway 44 and Lewis Rd.
Distance: 7 miles one way, 14 miles total.
This out-and-back trail is considered by many to be the premiere mountain biking trail in the metro St. Louis area. You can access the trail through Lone Elk Park or West Tyson Park, both of which are off of Highway 44. When you start at Lone Elk -- my prefered route -- you begin with a singletrack decent down to a fire road that parallels a train track. After about a mile on the fire road, you'll cross the train track and you'll be on rolling singletrack next to the Meramec River. After a couple miles of this, you'll turn away from the river, cross through a scenic field, and begin the technical, rocky portion of the trail. You'll have around a 350' climb from the river up to the highest point in the ride where you'll find a picnic bench. From the picnic bench, it is more or less downhill to the trail head at West Tyson. When you get to West Tyson, turn around and do the whole thing backwards. This is a trail that will definitely challenge your bike handling skills.
